This week I have been working on my portfolio to turn in for an extra credit assignment for class. In my portfolio I am trying to showcase my photography skills, as well as show that I have the ability to capture photos that are worthy of being published. I had a few photos that were guaranteed a spot in my portfolio because they had been published in a magazine and in a local news paper. However, the other photos were more difficult to pick , because I have shot so many photos over the last few months. I chose the other photos that were not published based on the image quality and composition of the photo.
Three of the photos that made the cut for my portfolio were three that were run in the Orange and Blue Magazine, which is a magazine that is published at UF. One photo is of local attorney Dan Glassman, who lost his wife to a brain tumor and then decided to run a marathon in her memory. Another photo is one that I shot for a story in the magazine depicting Garrett Garner, Campaign Manager for Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe, working very hard during the campaign. The third photo that was run in the Orange and Blue Magazine is a headshot of Bryce McKenzie who was the equipment manager for the Florida Gator football team during the Tim Tebow era.
The fourth photo that I used in my portfolio is one that I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I had just left my photojournalism professor’s office when three fire trucks went whizzing past, which is odd to see on UF’s campus. Needless to say curiosity got the best of me and I followed them to Newell Hall, where there were reports of smoke in the building. It turns out that an elevator motor had burned out and filled a couple of floors with smoke prompting someone to call 911 and evacuate the building. I sent the photos into the Independent Florida Alligator and they ran one on the front page the next day.
The rest of the photos that I chose to use are photos that I believe show off my strengths as a photographer. I included a photo that I shot at the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race in Salt Lake City Utah. I also included a photo that I shot of a model for my lighting class that I am in, and a couple of photos of my friend Matt that I also shot for the lighting class. The coolest photo that I used in my portfolio in my opinion is one that I shot of Norma Melendez for my painting with light assignment that I lit with a flashlight and a bunch of glow sticks.
